When I was in Year 3, we did this topic called Heroes. At the time, my naïve mind thought that Hero was some celebrity that I was into at the time so I said that my hero was this really cool band my Kuya just showed me called ‘My Chemical Romance’. Now I can say that the true Hero in my life is Lolo. A hero is admired for their strengths and courage. My Lolo is the strongest person I know. No matter how sick he felt, he managed to gather up the strength to smile every time we visited him. Whether it was in the hospital or at Tita Grace’s house, he was always genuinely happy to see us.
My favourite memory with Lolo was when we all gathered at Tita Grace’s house to have the anointing of the sick for him. We all gathered around his bed and sang his favourite song ‘Besame Mucho’ to him. For once in a very long time we were all in the same place brought and bound together by the love for Lolo and the happiness and vibrancy of his presence.
Lolo, you may not be physically here but I know you will always be up there with Nanay Rosie watching over and guiding me. So, I hope you’re listening because all I want to say is thank you. Thank you for being a loving parent, the kind which mine embody today. Thank you for showing me to be strong in times of adversity and when I felt like giving up, thank you for showing me how to keep going on. Thank you for brightening up the room with your smile but most of all thank you for being my hero. I love you Lolo.
